  1. The Kindle price is indeed £1.99, and it's a bargain. I have bought it.

    1. Bargain indeed, but I still like the feel of that book in my hand and a library to keep it in!

  2. Has anyone an opinion on photos?

  3. The book has another photo taken by William Jobes in 2015. He says he was taking landscape shots and only noticed the possible Nessie later. It looks to me like a thin stick protruding from the water at a slope of about 20 degrees to the horizontal. It doesn't look animate nor can I see any disturbance where it leaves the water. In fact if I saw it on a photo of mine my first thought would be "thread on the sensor".

I've tried to calculate its size (if it's a real object) from the information he gives on his camera (Canon 7D with 18-55 lens) and the fact that he says it was at least 1000 yards away. I get a length of at least 15 feet, which I think is just too big to be credible for the length of an animal's neck. However there are several uncertainties, not least the difficulty of working with a small monochrome photo on the screen of a Kindle (a point in favour of real books there!)

    1. 55mm doesn't get you in close at all, it's like a 1.5x zoom on this camera. Although it's a strange pairing. The 7d was Canon's flagship APS-C camera of the era, but the 18-55 is a basic 'kit' lens (excellent for the money). I've never heard of them used together, but it's not impossible I suppose. Still, it's feck all use at getting close, and an unusual choice if you're trying to catch Nessie.

  4. Currently about halfway through this book, and I have to say that it is one of the most poorly written things I've ever read.
The author has no concept of grammar, punctuation or the most basic idea of sentence construction...almost as disappointed as the residents of Lisbon who, on the morning of 1st November, 1755, woke up to find themselves, apparently in Spain.

    1. Now, 3 year olds have "no concept of grammar". so I think you exaggerate somewhat? What about the Nessie content, Riitta?

There is a reviewer on amazon called "dystopia" who dished out one star to the book (and my own not surprisingly) based on a spelling mistake but likes to give 5 stars to books he regards as sceptical (including for some unfathomable reason, "A Monstrous Commotion" which is more neutral in its tone IMO). He sounds a bit of an arse to me.

    2. In my opinion the author has very little concept of grammar. The book would have benefited greatly from a good editor or even a good spelling checker (two different mis-spellings of papier mache on the same page!)

The content is OK, I suppose, but adds very little to what I already knew. I think a much more informative (and more readable, and more grammatical!) book could be assembled from the contents of this blog.

    3. Actually I didn't find the spelling to be a problem...it was just the mangled writing. Still enjoying it though; will try not to be so precious in future!

  5. Got my copy yesterday. Im a bit disappointed that no further photo's of William Jobes's 2011 siggtings are in it, only one from 2015 and not the others he obtained in 2011 like i thought would be included in the book. Is there any way you can obtain these Roland? I would love to see them.
