Up at the Loch again

About six weeks after my day trip to Loch Ness, it was time for a longer visit to Britain's largest stretch of freshwater. We pitched up at the Foyers campsite where we have been going for a number of years now and always found a great place to stay. That site is up for sale and we wish Donald and Lyn Forbes well in their retirement and hope the good work continues under new ownership.

Now I do not normally go up north in July as I anticipate a surge of tourism crowds and it is generally hotter for moving around. As it turned out the crowds did not turn up and it looked more like May than July to me. Well, a lot of foreign tourists did not make the trip this year and the staycation people may have gone abroad in bigger numbers than I thought.

As usual, I took a walk along Foyers beach to take in the views but also this year with a task in mind; as will be explained later. Back in the tent as the sun descended, I read my usual chapter from Ted Holiday's 1968 book, "The Great Orm of Loch Ness". The chapter was "Foyers at Sunrise" which describes Holiday's first trip to the loch in August 1962, a spartan affair in an old van with fishing rods and frying pans which ended with Holiday catching his first sight of the creature from Upper Foyers.

The "orm" was down below in a small estuary beside the old aluminium works, but today I wondered if there was any chance of recreating that view due to the surge in growth of the intervening trees and other foliage. That depends where Holiday was standing, but the loch is not as accessible as it was sixty years ago.

One thing to check on this initial walk was that curious depressed area of grass I had found almost exactly a year before. The first photo shows what this large area looked like then and the second what it looks like now. Clearly some large weight had laid upon it a year ago and at some point it recovered its normal position. Actually, it looked a bit threadbare compared to last year. No worries, I jokingly mused, Nessie's toxic slime must have killed them off.

The following day, the hot and humid conditions continued as we took a leisurely drive up to Inverness, stopping at various points to watch the loch and consuming Pot Noodle for lunch. This was what is traditionally considered, "Nessie Weather", though how much of this is due to monsters or humans is unclear. More people are looking at the loch in good weather and the surface conditions are far less choppy, though there was a cooling breeze travelling up the loch.

In Inverness, we visited some bookshops and took in the reopened Museum. It has to be said that books on the Loch Ness Monster are hard to find in the largest centre of population just eight miles from the loch - apart from the usual kids' books. Even a visit to the well stocked Leakey's Secondhand bookshop had nothing. No Holiday, no Dinsdale, no Whyte or Gould (though their Abebooks account did have two Whyte books). But go online and you will find everything you need.

The next day we did a circuit of the entire loch from Foyers, through Fort Augustus, Drumnadrochit and back down via Dores. Stopping at Kilchuimen for supplies, I had one task which involved walking along the River Oich. There is a path you can take which lies tight between the river and the petrol station. Just remember to bring a machete at this time of year. Once the towering but derelict bridge arch came into view, I remembered Ricky Phillips.

I wondered if the branch he had photographed about two and a half years ago and palmed off as the monster was still there? Yes, it was as the photo below demonstrates. It is right in the centre and the zoom in shows it more clearly. As it turned out, the focus of this trip was all about famous hoax pictures.

Once we were back at base, there was work to be done. The waders were donned and the Garrett Ace 250 metal detector was taken out of the car boot. What has this to do with the Loch Ness Monster you may ask? The answer is the Surgeon's Photograph and the alleged toy submarine employed by Marmaduke Wetherell. Back in March, I had written an article suggesting that the site for this hoax was the western end of the beach at Foyers which I had walked along many a time.

There was therefore two questions to answer. Did Wetherell leave any pieces of the toy sub when he crushed it underfoot and how detectable would such fragments be today, eighty seven years on? My assumption was that it was a long shot that anything would be found, but there was only one way to find out and start metal detecting.

Since I was searching in the waters of the loch, there was no need to seek the permission of the owner of the beach. Fortunately, the Garrett detector is waterproof up to the control unit at the top. That gave me a couple of feet of water to work with. Since Ian Wetherell stated that his father had stepped on the sub as the water bailiff approached, it did not sound like too deep a waters.

I must admit I felt like that chap, Gary Drayton, from one of my favourite programmes, "The Curse of Oak Island". Would I manage that "top pocket find" and draw the curtain on the infamous picture? As I kicked off and swept the coil above the submerged rocks, the detector began buzzing almost right away. The rocks underfoot are quite big on this beach, going up to a foot across, so it was more about moving rocks than digging.

I reached down into the now cloudy waters and moved the rocks, retried the coil, gathering up handfuls of gravel for testing until I pulled up a very rusty sliding bolt latch. This was followed by hits on some metal bars, a door hinge and a fly tackle. The Gary Drayton effect had moved more onto what some of these objects were. They would send them off to a specialist blacksmith, I had to make my own educated guesses.

I suspect some of this was related to farming equipment, as the fields above used to be farmland. Fragments may have made their way down the hill from the fields above and kids just picked them up and threw them into the loch over the years and decades. How old the items were was not clear. But their thickness certainly helped preserve them over the years. What was also surprising was that they were buried under quite large rocks. I just expected those rocks to not move and things to lie on top.

So nothing related to the Wetherell hoax found, but I did not cover all the possible areas. After such a long time, my expectation was that perhaps the wind up motor unit would survive the longest, but of course, we do not know what was left behind as the Wetherells headed back to London. But all in all, it was a worthwhile exercise.

The next day, everything was packed up and we slowly headed back south. The weather was brilliant throughout, I had also done some reconnaissance on where to place trap cameras on our next visit and the metal detector as a device performed beyond my expectation, though what else one could employ it for in Loch Ness research is not so clear. Any ideas are invited.

As an aside, I listened to some of Scott Mardis' "Haunted Sea" chats on the "Monster X" podcasts in my tent in the evening. I would recommend his interview with veteran Nessie hunter, Henry Bauer and his chat with Ken Gerhard here. All good stuff.

  1. Hi Roland! Thanks for sharing your latest adventure with us. I have a wee question...

I enjoy reading about the land sightings, especially the accounts from Arthur Kopit's and Margaret Munro. I spent two days camping and exploring the shorelines hoping to find some sort of depression/impression/tracks but sadly found nothing. I was also on the hunt to find trees or shrubbery which have either been eaten or damaged. It's impossible to explore certain areas due to difficult terrain so there's a chance I've missed out.

Am I right in saying that you've used video traps in the past with the aim to see something either entering or leaving the water?

  3. Having failed to locate the toy submarine monster, you should have grabbed Tricky Ricky's hoaxed prop as a souvenir. After all, it is now part of infamous LNM hoaxery history and the shady characters who perpetrate them. In 87 years it will be gone also.

Want more of Henry Bauer? Here he is giving an excellent presentation. Sticking to his guns defending the validity of the Dinsdale film and the Surgeon's and Rines photos.

    1. The thought of it as a souvenir never appealed!

    2. Not so much as a souvenir, but as evidence/history. Why were you looking for Wetherell's sub? It does not exist. If it did, it would have been retrieved and kept, just like the hippo foot ash tray.

      Delete
    3. Maybe Wetherell didn't want evidence of his deception? But why not just take it with him and destroy it somewhere else. The perfect crime so to speak. Admittingly, it was a long shot to even find remnants of it after 87 years, if in fact it did ever exist!

  5. Hope u had a good time GB.. Just back myself after a 10 day hols up there! A couple of intrestin things I heard whilst in Fort augustus(don't shoot the messenger lol).. First is a few locals are adamant that the latest sonar images off cruise loch ness are nothing more than a large water tank that is known to have fallen in the loch! It has self buoyancy so is drifting on and off the bottom and it has bin picked up a few times now on their sonar.. A lad off the boat confirmed they have had a few similar contacts in same area in recent weeks including one on the bottom! Secondly I hear of a sighing near the Abbey on Monday afternoon off a couple walking up all na criche near Fort augustus.. A picture was taken off a phone but they want to stay anon.. but they sent the image over to the owner of the cabin Park were they were staying so its available to see... Hope this is of interest... Cheers ROY

    1. I would like to know who these "locals" are ... who was the lad off what boat?

Anyway, I don't accept this theory, What does self buoyancy mean? Once it fills with water there is only one direction - straight to the bottom and out if sight and sonar. How could it increase its buoyancy thereafter to be raised?

As I indicated in a past article, I saw interesting sonar contact on Cruise Loch Ness about two years ago - well before any water tank.

Let's see if this new photo appears in the media. Any old photo seems to end up somewhere.

I don't know about water tanks or self buoyancy but that's what the said.. I'd had a few beers outside bothy pub at the time but think they said the tank had a little water left in it when it fell in the loch!maybe sumone cud investigate if a big tank has fallen in cus they were pretty sure! And what do u mean any old photo',?? This is a new photo taken Monday just gone!..thought it wud be of interest but hey ho wish I'd never mentioned it now... Cheers

    8. Would this be the sonar picture from last year or whenever it was that Mr Feltham was very excited about, or are there fresh sonar pictures. My understanding of the sonar is they frequently pick up sightings with it all over the loch?

    10. So is that the one in dispute then?

    1. The boat was moving at the time, so establishing whether the object beneath was moving would prove more difficult.

I have asked around for corroboration of this water tank story but nothing so far. Where did it happen, when and how big was it? Even if someone did fly tip this into the loch, there is almost always one outcome, straight to the bottom and buried like all the other countless tons of rubbish thrown in the loch over the last 200 years.

(unless it was thrown into the shallows and it is still there under only 30 foot of water, etc)

    2. For a water tank to retain air when under water would the water outlet have to be sealed?

  9. I do think its strange how the boat has had a few large contacts in recent weeks in the same area after nothing for months on end and all looking the same. I think maybe there is something large bobbing up and down off the bottom of the loch in that area.

    2. How regular though? I bet it wasnt a few hits within a few weeks in the same area.

      Delete
    3. Hi Gezza,
Maybe the reason they are only having sonar hits in that particular area of the Loch, now, after nothing for months is because there were no boats on the Loch for quite some time because of the Lockdown.I remember viewing the webcam over that period, there was very few boats of any description to see. Eoin O Faodhagain.

      Delete
    4. Yes but even before lockdown they went months without a contact.I spoke with a guy who works on the boat a couple of years ago and he confirmed this.

    5. How regular? 600 contacts in 10 years. As I state in my article from two years ago:

    6. 600 in 10 years? I would take that with a pinch of salt.

      Delete
    7. That doesn't mean 600 top quality contacts, they vary. But if there are large creatures in the loch, how many times would you expect them to be hit by sonar?

      Delete
  10. Yes the cruise loch ness have always had sonar contacts but in his interview Ronald" the skipper said he had never seen one like this.. then not long after he was bemused cus he had another one on same route! then a few weeks later another one was had on the bottom and according to a member of the crew I spoke too they had another couple weeks back! Whilst I was optimistic bout this sonar contact im not so sure now!! I hope im wrong but for me it doesn't look good!.. Maybe Mr Feltham can investigate this so called water tank which I was told fell in in that area in deep water... Cheers

  20. Regarding water tank. Was the water tank sealed? I could imagine that if sealed, and contained the right proportion of water/air, perhaps it could be bouncing around under the surface as another poster suggested. Sealed or not, at what depth it would be either crushed or ruptured, depends on its material strength.

I suppose there's also the possibility that a sealed tank containing an air pocket could find a depth where it becomes neutrally buoyant and bounce around there.

Gleaning all this from general knowledge and am not some fluid dynamics physicist or hydrologist, heh.

  36. It's very interesting to read this thread, and see how this new photograph is being fed into the narrative of the nessie mystery.
I too have been shown this latest photo, which shows a dark shadow pushing towards the shore at the southern end of the abbeys ground. It's taken from a distance of a mile so it doesn't provide much information.
The far more interesting information is two fold, apparently the witness said that immediately before the sighting one of the cruise loch ness RIB BOATS, (The super fast inflatables) did its final burst along that location before returning to the canal at the end of its tour, which would give a mundane explanation to the photo.
But the detail that finished my hope of this being the latest breakthrough was that the person who took the photo was the person who calls himself "Roy" in this group, and who is now trying to premote it as someone else's picture because of his rather chequered past in relation to photographs supposedly taken in Loch ness but actually taken elsewhere.
I think that's right? Is that right Roy?
Sorry to be a bubble buster, I don't want to come across as a sceptic in anyway.
Also, whilst I'm here I'd just like to add that I don't hold very much stock in "Roy's" half cut conversion with a local about something falling off the back of a boat, sinking, but remaining about 100ft off the bottom for only the duration of one boat trip, the one when Ronald picked up his game changing contact. I have seen all the other sonar contacts from last summer, and I've shown them to Roland, and they don't strike me as this tank that seems to not only remain suspended at various depths in deep water, but moves around the southern Bason quite considerably.
And that explanation is not favoured by the life long sonar experts that I have spoken to about these contacts.
There is another local that I've had drunken conversations with that believes there's a spaceship sitting on the bottom off the horseshoe, doesn't mean there is.
Anyway, back to you Roy, tell us about this photo that your so excited about.

    1. Are you referring to the Loch Tarff picture, Steve?

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately yes I am Roland.
Geraint Gibson originally said he took those two photos from his car window near inverfaragaig.
When I went it search of the location it became apparent that there was nowhere where you could take a picture through branches of trees from your car.
Soon after I said online that it was not taken where Geraint claimed, the story changed to his mate having taken it, but Geraint was just making it public for him.
A year of quite heated online argument followed, a lot of "are you calling me a liar" type postings, until one day I finally found the hump that had been photographed, complete with the identical tree branches, 5 miles away from Loch ness in Loch Tarff!
It was a rock in about 6 inches of water.
Then and only then did the story change to Geraints mates having deliberately played a trick on him, and Geraint wanted to be entirely innocent.
In spite of the various story changes Geraint Gibsons name has gone down in my personal "black museum"of Nessie hoaxers that I have exposed, along with the likes of George Edwards.
So when I was told who had taken this latest photo but wanted to remain anonymous my heart sank.
      Is that all accurate Roy?

      Delete
    3. It might be the real deal, but if George Edwards was to tell someone that he had taken another photo of Nessie, but then try to make it public by saying it was taken by someone else who wanted to remain anonymous, I don't know that I would believe him.
The truth is always the simplest route to take because you can't get caught out with that.

      Delete
    4. Ahh man, this is disappointing. Come on Roy, what's the deal here?

      Delete
    5. If your theory is true, it would explain the mystery water tank. Since there is no love lost between you and Gibson, inventing the tank story has a go at you since you have stood by the sonar contact.

Anyway, right of reply and all that, Roy.

    1. Roy, let's cut to the chase ... are you Geraint Gibson?

      Delete
    2. Keep up Roland, this was first pointed out to me about 3 years ago!
Why did you think I kept referring back to the "Rock in the wrong loch sighting" so often?

      Delete
    3. I would like to hear it from his own keyboard, rather than us telling him.

      Delete
    4. Anyway, Geraint can you email me the photo you took?

      Delete
    5. It's quite telling that in your last comment you said this Roy...
"I wudnt like to think he is a liar so I take it he has bin misinformed bout my photo and story.."
      My photo?
      Was that just a mistake?
Or are you now saying that you took it?

Throw away ur dislike for me for one day and hear what I have to say.. A civil friendly chat then if u still don't believe me fair enuf!! Some untruths u put out there today and thats not right.. 1. I'm not entirely against having a phone conversation about piecing together what's gone on here, getting to the truth. And like you I have no great dislike of you, people think I must hate George Edwards, not at all, he's a lovely bloke, I've had some right good laughs with him in the past. Actually when I read Roland's comment about "no love lost between us" I just thought that that was Roland sticking the knife in and sturring it up a bit, plus he probably wanted to get across the point that the sinking/floating tank story does sound a bit... Improbable, to say the least.
To that end tonight I spoke to one of the crew from the relevant time, and he too thought it was far fetched to say the least.
But anyway, I think it would be interesting to have a chat some time, or maybe even a pint or two, I suspect we have a lot in common, a love of this mystery for one.
But it's not enough to explain what's going on to me in private, Roy lives in this blog you have a lot of comrades here that you agree and disagree with over a shared interest in devining the truth, (some are utter crackpots obviously) but you owe it to this group to tell the story of what happened.
If not you can tell me on the phone, and then I will tell them, but it would be far better coming from you.
      Just the truth.

    2. Steve, I did want to get across this improbable tank tale. But why promote it? To me, he either just loves lying, he wants to discredit any Nessie evidence or he wants to discredit those involved in this story.

We have seen more of the last option in the comments of Geraint's other alter ego on this forum.

  44. I agree Steve the blog deserves to know what happened..and they will!! ! But really there is not too much too it apart from me snappin a foto of an unusual object on the loch from high up allt na criche but not bin able to put my name to it cus of a hoax that was played 8 or 9 years in Loch tarff!!! (and I swear I didn't know it and the actual trick was played on me by two workmates) but I sent the foto in thinking it was something! So I had a dilemma. I wanted the people in here to see the foto but if u saw my name u wud rubbish it.. So it was easier to say I heard a foto was taken and left at the cabin park( which was true) therefore all on here cud see it.. Sometimes u can't do right for wrong... Cheers

  45. If GB puts his email addy on I will send him my number and yes I wud like a chat. I will also screenshot the convo I had with Gary and you both can see how many untruths wer put out yesterday!! Where did u get the part I saw a RIB going into the canal?? I didn't see any RIB at this time.. Only RIB I saw was bout half hour later coming Out of the canal as we climbed down the criche so I wud say roughly bout 4pm..the foto my 'daughter' took was 3.23pm along with another foto and short vid which showed nothing there seconds later! And no I didn't 'conjour' a father and daughter story last minute. . I was holidaying with my daughter for 10 days and told Gary that my daughter took the foto. I'm not calling u a liar Steve but u received wrong information on this episode!!oh and not once did I claim to see nessie..i even told Gary it might be nothing..i told him he cud do what he wants with the foto.. Funny enuf I had a phone call off someone claiming to be from the daily mail yesterday asking me for the foto... I declined.. I'm not after attention or anything like that I just wanted the people on this blog to see the foto.. Hey maybe I shud of kept it to myself..cheers

    Definitely something large surfacing.
Very reminiscent of what was frequently described by Mrs Cary and visitors from her vantage point.

  48. The original foto is in my daughters fone.. She sent it over to me by messenger! All the details will be in that for sure.. Time.. date which as I said was 19th July at 3.23pm!! I was willng to send u the original via my dawtas fone but after all the twists and untruths bout my story im not so sure! saying I conjured up a father dawta story and that I said I saw a RIB going into the canal has left a bitter taste!!! Only boat I saw before the sighting was the cruise loch ness CRUISE.. not a RIB and the cruise had left approx 20 mins or so before because it was going past the horseshoe scree at the time of the foto.. Yes MY foto lol.. but taken by my daughter on her apple iPhone 12 Pro max if im correct. Im sorry for the confusion so I will leave u all in peace now.. Happy hunting Steve AND Eoin I really hope u see summit in future and u GB on ur cameras!!. Cheers

    1. Yes it was confusing to start with, but some things have now been cleared up after some questions were asked, etc.

The lingering one is this water tank story...

    2. @Roy thank you for sharing this! It's a great photo. Can anyone determine the size?

      Delete
  49. It is by far the best sighting so far this year, I'd even go so far as to call it the only sighting so far this year.
    Worthy of studying.
I'd love a better res image too if possible,
    Steve@nessiehunter.co.uk
But I understand if you don't want to send me that.
Two points about this whole ruckus, I was told that a cruise Loch ness boat had entered the canal some time shortly before the sighting, I took that to be a RIB, fair enough, there is no evidence of that on the surface. However, some kind of boat certainly did enter the canal immediately before the sighting because the wake is clearly visible in the foreground.
Secondly, I think this is right in front of the river mouth there, so that may have some baring on things, wouldn't really be able to tell without seeing a better quality image.
And thirdly, you never really had to hide your name from the story because you didnt actually take the picture, it's your daughters name that should be on it not yours.
Anyway, we still should have that pint some time, especially now that we have this to talk about as well as everything else nessie related.
I bet it feels better owning it though.
All the best Roy... Geraint... What should we call you now?

She doesn't live with me so won't see her till sun or Mon so I will get her to email you the foto from her fone..i have no problems with that as I do trust u lol.. Right think the best for all now if I make this comment my last.. Good luck all..the legend lives on!!!! . Cheers

    5. I'd disagree a little Roy. The "crap and accusations" usually get slung - often deservedly - when the "photos of the monster" are obviously laughable fake garbage.

In this case you've come forward earnestly, named the photographer, story is plausible and the image looks worthy of investigation. If you get grief, I'm sorry, but you at least know the territory. And you also know that denying the community examination of such a photo would be a shame, so thanks for that.

  56. Geraint's photo is intriguing, if this disturbance is created by something living in the Loch I would suggest that it shows two creatures. Looking at the angles of the waterline and the lighter midsection of the image gives me that impression.

Texts and messages always result in confusion and argument but at the end of the day we all have the same interest.. The loch ness mystery!! Was disappointed GB says i made up the water tank.. I swear down sumone told me in the village and i was gutted hearing this cus I thought the sonar contact was summit..if we can eliminate the tank as nonsense then great.. Thats wat I was after not making it up to rub sumone up the wrong way! Steve and GB put a lot of work into the mystery so I have no axe to grind over online mixed up messages! I'm willing to send the original fotos from dawtas fone to both Steve and GB to show there is no bad feeling! Need ur email addy GB.. I've got Steve's now.. All the best lads and lasses.. 60. Having zero patience with low res, blurry, pixelated blob images.
This iPhone 12pro has a 12+ megapixel camera.
I'm also curious as to why Roy's daughter sending the image(s) to Roland or other pertinent parties requires having to come 'round to his place in order to do so.

In future, unless someone's got a high res quality image that shows something very tangible, please don't flippin' bother, lol.
There's always a 'we did have a real good pic but the dog ate it' type situation with recording of anomalous events.

    5. Lulu, I personally never filmed this footage, it's from the 90s. I will let you guys know once work has been done on the footage.

Please be patient, the wait will be worth it because in my opinion it's easily the best video footage we have of something very large swimming around in Loch Ness.

I have tried several times to track the individual down but it's been a long time and details are few and far between unfortunately. Roland is far superior in regards to doing the detective work on these accounts so hopefully soon I will share what I've found.

I also want to add that I'm in no way shape or form pulling a hoax, a prank or even a publicity stunt as I'm keeping it on here for the time being. Please be patient and one day very soon I will forward everything over to Roland if he's willing to help.
