Robert Rines and Richard Fitter do Book Reviews

I acquired some pages from an old copy of the International Journal of Cryptozoology (Vol.7 1988) which had some Loch Ness Monster articles. Three books were reviewed by Robert Rines, well known past President of the Academy of Applied Science; Richard Fitter, co-founder of the Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau and Jack Gibson of the Scottish Natural History Library.

They respectively reviewed Henry Bauer's "The Enigma of Loch Ness", Steuart Campbell's "The Loch Ness Monster: The Evidence" and Edward Armstrong's "Sticking My Neck Out!". The first two will probably be known to most readers, the last one was privately published and I looked at it myself some years back at this link. The pages are shown below and you click on them to get a larger, readable image.

Reading their review of Campbell's book it really looks like they'd concluded Nessie wasn't a real thing.

    1. Fitter gives the impresion he has given up on plesiosaurs, etc, but still finds 5% or so of sightings still requiring an explanation beyond waves and local wildlife.

    2. The problem is which 5% and the fact that those "sightings" which make up the 5% could all be completely fraudulent.

    3. Well, its more than 5% for me.

Ya know, I've been scratching my head a lot lately about Loch Ness. I can't work this one out. So many people have reported seeing something. And yet... and yet.... nothing has come to light after all these years in terms of good quality evidence.

I'm friends with a very trustworthy couple who had the most vivid of sightings back in the summer of 1990. Their story is breathtaking but it didn't make it into any books or newspapers because they don't want wider publicity. So whenever I talk to this couple for 10 minutes about that day I am thoroughly convinced that a large, long necked animal is in there. And yet... and yet.... even my dear friends cannot show me a photo or video, so I cannot help wondering if they didn't see quite what they now believe they saw.

    It's a tough one. The head-scratching continues!

Ok I will let them know, Glasgow Boy. Anonymity would need to be guaranteed though. Without that I know there's no chance. I'll call them this evening and let them have your email address. Thank you for the interest.
