Some Recent Webcam Photographs

Joaquin is one of this blog's regulars, but he also likes to keep an eye on the loch via the webcam run by Mikko Takala at this link. I have had a few pictures sent to me by such users over the years and some have certainly looked interesting. More often than not, it is a case of selecting from a range of objects that are not necessarily monster. That is mainly down to the fact that the webcam must be at least 200 metres from the loch and too far for game changing pictures.

So, Joaquin has two snapshots he sent me. The first he took on January the 5th this year. The object did not appear on the next snapshot which would have been about 15 seconds later. The task is to identify the crescent like object just right of centre. Joaquin added some geometry based on a later picture of a Caley Cruiser to estimate the size of the object which he thinks is about 1.7m long and 0.5m high. I have not attempted to verify these estimates.

The second picture was taken about a week ago and shows a more blunted type of object protruding from the water just above the bottom right of the picture. It's doesn't look like a wave and not a log as it again disappeared on the next webcam refresh. Using another snap of a passing boat, Joachin estimates the object is half a metre wide and high.

I must admit it looked like a dorsal fin on first appearances, but we covered that argument in the recent F.C.Adams photo article. Readers are invited to suggest explanations and they don't have to be Nessies!

  1. Could be anything I'm sorry to say. Pity the cam was not real time video motion, the three or so second screen update does not help in this case.

Having said that, nice site I've added it to my favourites. I read on the site they are starting an underwater cam? Could be interesting as to the location/depth in the Loch.

  2. Funny enough i was flicking through webcam images only yesterday on youtube, there is a good one from 2014 that shows 2 objects that seem to vanish after a short period.

The underwatercam could be the way forward.

    1. Trouble is the Lochs underwater visibility is very poor below 10ft I think this would pose a problem as to an actual sighting.

  3. The object in your first picture looks to be at about the same distance as the boat in your fourth picture, and to be about half its angular size at the waterline (measuring from the screen, and allowing for the fact that the first picture has been cropped). If the boat is a typical small cabin cruiser such as a Cygnet, that would make the object about 4.5 m wide! I.m not sure where the estimate of 1.70 m comes from.

  4. I too peek at the loch daily. The camera's distance from the loch is too far from the shore. I remember in the early 2000's a different camera that was closer to the shore and panned . That's when I had a "sighting" . A large wake moved from left to right close to the shore. It was not a boat , but I didn't see any kind of body. It made its way to what I assume was Urquart Bay where it submerged , leaving some concentric waves behind. The snapshot button didn't work at the time. I wonder if I really did see the phenomena from my cosy bedroom in Reno, Nevada!

  5. Have you got any links to more possible Nessie sightings on the webcams Roland? I can only find one or two.
    Thanks

  6. As to Nessie spotting, wouldn't it be great idea if a website could give a real time underwater sonar display of an area of the Loch?

I shall look into the possibilities.

  7. I'm not convinced the first object is in the water.

The second picture is more interesting.

  9. The first object looks mostly like a bird moving between the trees in my view.

    2. When my son was shown this picture his first comment was "it doesn't look right" and he is a sceptic so I thought well you would say that wouldn't you.
After reading the comments above and looking at the picture with those thoughts in mind I think the object in question may well be in the air rather than in the water.
The second object looks like it is in the water.Without Film or multiple frames it is difficult to determine anything.

  10. I watched a Nessie programme once Adrian shine was investigating an object that someone spotted on the webcam. He said it must be a boat as it was close in and early morning. He said only two sizes of fishing boats could be the culprit so he decided to do a test. He took the small boat out to the exact spot and somebody took a snap but the boat was too small. He then took the bigger boat out but that was too big. A puzzled Mr Shine said well we conclude its a boat... Hmm ok Adrian! Roy

  12. It would be interesting to know the time of day these images were captured. In Lake Champlain (Americas Loch Ness) my organization has gathered video and audio at certain times that is trademark to these animals behavior.
