Coming your way is a new book about the Loch Ness Monster by the author of this blog and entitled "When Monsters Come Ashore". As you may guess from the title, it is the first book on the creature that dedicates itself to a study of a mystery within a mystery - alleged sightings of the monster on land. We have a few dozen of these stories gathered over three centuries and they are the most provocative of all monster accounts.
This aspect of Loch Ness lore has always fascinated me and indeed has prompted debate amongst monster believers as to what it means for their view of the creature. Even the notorious Frank Searle pronounced that all land sightings account were rubbish!
The book draws on material from this blog amassed over these past seven years as well as adding new material written especially for this book. Cases covered and unique to the book are the famous Arthur Grant and Torquil MacLeod incidents and also added is the most recent land account - the Ian Monckton incident (who the author managed to contact last year). You can also expect a few others items, such as the Una MacPherson case. Who is Una MacPherson you may ask? Buy the book and you'll find out!
As stated elsewhere before, one day this blog will cease to exist for whatever reason and this book is the first step in transferring that knowledge to a more permanent, physical form. The original intent was to do it all in one book, but at 600+ articles and counting, it was decided to split the job into at least three books, of which this one constitutes the first.
Copies can be purchased from the UK at this link and from the USA at this link. As with my previous book, "The Water Horses of Loch Ness", there is no plan to put this in Kindle format for the reasons stated above - moving from the digital to the physical.
The author can be contacted at lochnesskelpie@gmail.com
Well let me be the first to say congratulations on writing another book, but I agree with Searle regarding land sightings. Such an event is simply physically impossible, and unless Nessie has a firm knowledge of the surrounding landscape they are quite often geographically impossible as well. But you write about the subject with such passion I'm it is a great read whether one agrees with your position or not...
ReplyDeleteHuge turtles come on to land so its not physically impossible.Nice to see you write a book on this subject alone Roland. All the best.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on writing another book!
ReplyDeleteGreat GB I'm looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteThank you all.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, one well known troller on amazon has given it one star when it is highly unlikely he has even seen a copy.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-reviews/RR0WCFRNJ5YRI/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1981279008
Amazon have now removed the troll.
DeleteLOL They may have removed (banned?) the troll but they left his review as a testament to his narrow mindedness. Is he even a believer or just skeptical on land excursions? Pseudo Skeptic in that regard. Objectivity? How did he expect objectivity when the author is clearly an enthusiastic, passionate; pro Nessie, true believer. One really has to be open minded and consider every possibility in this mystery. When it comes to the LNM, nothing is as simple as it seems!
DeleteWell that just sums up the sceptics Roland, it really does.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading it.
ReplyDeleteRemind me again what the Ian Monckton sighting was?
February 2009.
DeleteOne star from a troller??? Everyone moans about hoaxers spoling the mystery but so do these types !!! I agree i doubt he has even read it...i hope these shallow remarks dont put people off buying ur book GB...land sightings not for me i admit but i might add it to my collection as i know it will be well written and well researched by you and the stories are all part of the great mystery!! Good luck with the book GB!!...m.Roy
ReplyDeleteBig congrats Roland!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nick!
DeleteI have purchased my copy, I never reeally comment on the LNM but I follow the blog and love it.I have been to the Loch many times.I once took a internet photo on the old Scotland online webcam.
ReplyDeleteRemember to review it on amazon, thanks.
DeleteI’ve ordered my copy. Amazon tell me I’m getting it on 7th March.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting!
ReplyDeleteJust checked it out..decent price too so ill order one next week! I find it hard to think that if there are monsters in the ness these things come out of the water because we only have a couple of reports in the last 30 odd years! But never say never i suppose!! I read there was a report in 1999 and very similar to spicers report by an american tourist!! Any more on this one GB...not much detail ...page 45 in the complete visitors guide to loch ness and inverness by Andy Owens....cheers ..Roy
ReplyDeleteYes, details on more recent reports are hard to come by. Ian Monckton stands out, I guess people are skittish about the blowback from sceptics.
DeleteBirthday coming up at the end of the month...Will drop suitable hints! Land sightings definatly one of my fave aspects of the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteIs there any active Nessie or other cryptozoology communities on the internet? Been searching and all I've find are dead. Would be interested in joining the conversation, and find other enthusiastics :)
ReplyDeleteGo onto Facebook and look for the "Zombie Plesiosaur Society".
DeleteVery good read... You did stellar work in narrowing down the possible location of the Spicer sighting. Is there a chance that the actual location of the Grant sighting is known? All the literature says is "near Abriachan". As I near retirement, I would love to spend a good 2 weeks at the loch, getting a real sense of the space and the various locations I've read about all my life. The land sighting locales will be prime targets, and I'd also love to stand where Greta Finlay parked her caravan! BTW, is her son still alive? Would LOVE to hear his account of the sighting.
ReplyDeleteMine came in the mail yesterday! I'm thoroughly enjoying the read. Congrats and thanks Roland for this wonderful book.
ReplyDeleteThank you, remember those amazon reviews where possible.
ReplyDeleteIts also on ebay, couple of quid dearer than amazon.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, so it is. Amazon are actually producing the book via Print On Demand, so this eBay seller must just be ordering it and reselling.
DeleteNot much difference in price so cant be making much profit. 268 pages it says, fair play Roland that is a decent sized book.
ReplyDeleteSlightly bigger font size for the hard of seeing ...
DeleteCongrats GB! Amazon delivered mine today :)
ReplyDeleteCome hell or high water Iv'e got to get this book! This is one of the queerest aspects of the LNM.
ReplyDeleteGB you mention that one day this blog will cease to exist, as all good things must. Well take heart, it will hopefully be preserved for future generations in the Internet Archive, although in a somewhat degraded form (some photos missing). Here's an idea. When the time comes, hopefully before your demise, put it all on CDs I'm sure there would be some buyers. In fact you could possibly do it now. It's format could be as a living document, with hot links to the present blog and external links. Just a thought.
