I was invited some weeks back to speak to Jon Mallard on his show, "The Odd to Newfoundland Paranormal Podcast" and had a good half hour chat on Nessie matters with a few words to say on land sightings. The podcast can be found here and my slot begins about 48:30 minutes in. Let me know what you think and if you have any supplementary questions prompted by that discussion, leave a comment.

I remember the story of the Canadian's claim in 2004, At the time they described it as big, slimy and serpentine looking, but wasn't it determined to be a hoax? The anonymous person's land sighting in 1999 near Foyers is the first time I've heard of that one. Anybody know anything more on that one? Interesting.
ReplyDeleteExcellent companion to your book on the land sightings, Roland. I certainly hope that modern technology, including trap cameras or continuous video in HD which can be reviewed daily. Surely the same technology that alerts me when something is near my garage door, and saves an HD video, can be utilized at the Loch? Anyway, great interview - rational and non-melodramatic.
ReplyDeleteThanks, automatic high def surface surveillance is one of my favoured tactics.
DeleteJohn Alvarado.. it was in february 1999 by an american tourist who reported a 10- 15 meter long necked creature on the road betwen dores and foyers which scurried from the dark into the water..she refused to give her name! Hope this helps....cheers Roy
ReplyDeleteThanks Roy. Regarding the Canadian's story, I Googled it and all I could find in this cursory search was this article, which suggest Nessies may be giant eels :
Deletehttps://mysteriousuniverse.org/2017/05/nessie-the-controversy-of-the-lack-of-sightings/
The snippet from that article reads thusly:
Jon Downes, who runs the CFZ, offers this: “In February 2004 two Canadian tourists came upon a 25-foot eel floating in the shallows of Loch Ness. At first they thought it was dead but when it began to move they beat a hasty retreat.”
I have always found the Canadian's story very intriguing. One account I read at the time was that they had seen the creature on the shore, not “floating in the shallows” and had left massive track marks and a deep depression on the ground. I went through my old LNM files and I found a printout I had made at the time and this is what one of the tourists had to say about the experience: “ We where waiting to get rides from some girls we met, but never showed. We were force to walk home...and that's when we saw it. It was massive, as big as a lorry, and it got away with a big splash. It looked and moved like a giant serpent! You'll never catch me near Loch Ness again!” The only thing is, the sighing date it referenced was 18th December 2004, not February 2004. Hmmm, the same one? They had even video taped the area. Later on somewhere, I learned that it had all been made up. Meh, who knows. You know, one of my best candidates for the LNM has been a giant eel-like creature, but I'm not so sure about that. Sure there are probably large, bigger than normal eels inhabiting Loch Ness , but there could be something more monstrous than simply giant eels at play here. I think something more gigantic and bizarre is afoot here.
I think Steve Feltham may have investigated the canadian case and there was talk of them being fooled by long plastic pipes or tubing - which sounds too simplistic, but I haven't read any details on the case or the reasoning for such a conclusion (apart from a vague memory that workmen may have been there with such equipment).
DeleteYeah, I agree GB, too simplistic. Plastic pipes and tubing just doesn't behave like what they described. And how big was the tubing/piping anyway? The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register also does not record this incident. Does that mean it didn't happen? Maybe. At this point I'm inclined to think it was all a hoax. It would be interesting to find out what Steve has to say about it. At about this time frame 2004-2005, two American college students claimed to have discovered a mutilated deer carcass on the shore with a supposed tooth/fang embedded in it. Further, it was claimed that the tooth belonged to the LNM creature, seems Nessie clambered ashore and was out for a snack. It was later disclosed that the “tooth” was in fact a deer antler . Those foreigners! Just want to stir up trouble.
DeleteFollow up to above cases: These two incidents really irk the heck out of me. So, I decided to do a little recollecting from what I remember and also searched the web. This is what I found out: At about that time, Steve Alten's “The Loch” was about to be published. Alten had hired a private investigator and paranormal researcher by the name of Bill McDonald to do some background investigation on the LNM. I believe he is the one who initially investigated and video recorded the “semi-frozen animal slide/track” of the Canadian's alleged sighting. Not long after, he was involved in the tooth incident, which was later revealed to be a promotional stunt for Alten's fictional book about a giant, mutated, vicious, man-eating eel. Could the Canadian's account have been part of this stunt! I believe so.

Correction on previous comment. The incident I cite I now believe to be from two touring British guys on 18th Dec 2004. The Feb. 2004 is then the Canadian story. Hmmm...then which is the fake and which is the real deal?
DeleteThe pipe was at least 20 metres long. It rolled in the waves as they washed onto the beach, as I remember it was there for more than a week before I pulled it out. Came from the fish farm (a mile away up the loch) Lots of this sort of piping used to wash in, along with numerous other bits of "fishfarm'ary" including a cage.. Twice.
DeleteA long time ago now, and laughed about at the time.
Hope this helps.
Thanks. The Dec. 18 2004 incident may also have been a stunt in promotion of the Alten book. These two incidents are also not noted in the The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register for that time frame. Who knows, this is all very confusing.
Delete10 - 15 meters translates to 30 to 45 feet. I find
ReplyDeleteit highly unlikely that a 45 foot long animal could 'scurry',
cryptid or not. . . .
You have been criticised for your spelling and your unique way of writing Roy but i have to say your knowledge on this subject is second to none; fair play.
ReplyDeleteA 45 ft animal is indeed a bit large to scurry around, but if it was dark this could mislead the sighting and of course human nature can be way out on sizes.
Cheers gezza..i have done a lot of studying on the mystery and go there a lot and have gud friends at the loch...i just dont take it as serious as others...i do but i dont if u see wat i mean lol its a great mystery..lovely place..just av a laugh innit!! No harm in a few tennents on the loch with one eye out on the water haha! As dinsdale said..if its there its just an animal..no more fantastic than an elephant !!!! Happy new year to you and keep the commments coming ..i love the blog it keeps ya updated...roll on more sighhtings for 2019.....cheers Roy
ReplyDeleteTrue enough, once it is discovered, we won't be batting an eyelid at it years down the line.
DeleteIans photo shows skin patterns on it's back or stomach when blown up.
DeleteA Roland analysis of the fried chicken Nessie photo is urgently needed.
Again I think more than one species of large unknown animals inhabit the loch.
More than one species of unknown animals? Oh no, don't say that John, we can't even identify one. And yes, there are what appear to be blotches and darker linear streaks on it's back, if that is it's back.
DeleteHi Roland, loved the podcast & like you,if I was to come by lots of money,I'd be looking to buy the best, possibly military grade underwater search devices available. There must be some incredible gear out there now.
